Plot Summary - The story takes place in Lithuania in 1941. Lina is fifteen years old and is like any other girl her age, likes boys, loves art and to read. One night Soviet officers come and take her family, her father gets separated. They take him to a different train. Throughout the story they're trying to find the father. They're forced to Siberia under Stalins rule. They work in terrible conditions and are treated horribly.
Personal Reaction - This is a story of love, courage, and great strength. It was heartbreaking to read but overall was a beautifully written book.
Memorable Literary Element - Symbolism was evident in this book. Lina used art to express herself during the time period when Stalin was in control. Such expression could've gotten her killed during this time. I think her need to express herself with art symbolizes her need for family, love, passion, and never giving up.
Review - “Beautifully written and deeply felt, …an important book that deserves the widest possible readership.”--Booklist, Starred Review
